There is a Hoodless lineage which hails from the small village of Wetheral on the banks of the River Eden about 8km east of Carlisle and I’m going to have an in depth look at this branch. This chart shows William Hoodless’s children with his wife, Margaret Gillespie, their spouses and children.

- William Hoodless is assumed to be born in early 1775.
- 2nd Mar 1775 – William is baptised at Wetheral by his parents John Hoodless and Ann.
- 15th May 1791 – William married Margaret Gillesby (sic). He is 16 years old and his bride is 23 years his senior
- Late 1791 their first child William, is born and baptised at Wetheral 11 Dec 1791.
- Archibald Hoodless baptised 14 Aor 1793, Wetheral.
- Barnard Hoodless baptised 11 May 1800 at Wetheral.
- Hannah Hoodless, baptised 27 Mar 1803 at Wetheral.
- Margaret Hoodless baptised 7 Oct 1804 at Wetheral.
- William does not appear in the first England census in 1841. Margaret is a widow
- William Hoodless presumably dies sometime before 1841
1841 Census
Margaret in her seventies is living in Wetheral with her eldest son William, a quarry man, and a younger William Hoodless aged in his teens.
Unfortunately the 1841 census rounded a person’s age up to the nearest 5 years.
