This is the tree of Thomas Hoodless, fifth child of William Hudlass and Jane Harrington

Thomas-H-1816-84

Timeline

  • 1816 Thomas Hoodless was born and was baptised at High Head on 19th May 1816
  • Things go dark with Thomas for a while in the records and I have been unable to locate him on either the 1841 or the 1851 Census.
  • 12th December 1858 Thomas marries Jane Fawkes at Carlisle, Cumberland.
  • In 1861 Thomas and Jane appear in the census living in the Hawkesdale area, near Dalston where Jane was born. Hawkesdale is notable for being the residence of the Bishops of Carlisle who resided at Rose Castle, a fortified country house nearby, which provided employment for many of the locals.
1851 England Census

In the 1851 census are listed three Hoodless children – Joseph aged 11, Samuel aged 7, James aged 1 and Thomas’s widowed mother Jane is living with them. Now, since Thomas and Jane only married three years earlier the two older children pose a bit of a conundrum. After some digging and head scratching I found that Jane had been married to a man called William Graham on 23rd March 1846 and he had died some time after the birth of Samuel in 1854. I have found no documents for Joseph or Samuel prior to them appearing in the 1861 Census. But it appears they took the Hoodless surname (officially or unofficially I cannot yet confirm) and kept it for their lifetimes. So my speculation is that James Hoodless is the first born child of Thomas and Jane.

  • 1871 the family are still living in the same residence “Royal” in the Hawkesdale parish. Thomas and Jane are bread baking for a living. The two older children have moved on and they have three more sons – John aged 9, Robert aged 6, Frederick aged 4.
  • 1881 Thomas is now 65 and Jane is 53 and they have moved to 4 Three Crowns Lane, in the city centre of Carlisle. Thomas is working as a general labourer. Son Robert, aged 16, is a drapers apprentice, Frederick, aged 14, still at school. Three Crowns Lane is now known as Lowther Arcade on English Street, just up on the right from Carlisle Railway Station. A very narrow passageway leading through to Lowther Street.

  • 1890 Thomas Hoodless dies in April 1890 at the age of 74.
  • 1901 Jane his wife is living with youngest son Frederick and his family at 17 St Anns Lane, Edentown, Carlisle
  • 1905 Jane Fawkes Hoodless dies in 1905
